What Makes a Giraffe so Awesome?

What makes a Giraffe so awesome?

Giraffes are incredible creatures - ones that we are honoured to share a name with! Here's why...

Firstly, did you know that at six metres tall the Giraffe is the world’s tallest animal? Their scientific name is Giraffa camelopardalis and their first experience of life usually consists of a nice, sharp two meter drop to the ground! (Females opt for ‘standing’ in childbirth… cheers Mum.)

Giraffe are also excellent diplomats! Males and Females tend to eat from different parts of a tree to ensure that the sexes do not ever have to compete for their food; and every time they lift their huge necks, they effectively bench 550 pounds! That’s like picking up a Baby Grand Piano weighing approximately 240kgs every time you lift your head

In short ladies and gentlemen, Giraffe are the diplomatic, spotted Schwarzeneggers of the Sahara and they must be protected.

Giraffe preservation work

Although Giraffe are currently listed on the 'ICUN Red List of Threatened Species’ as of ‘Least concern’, the next step on the list is ‘Near Threatened and it is generally accepted that their population is declining (in 2008 just 100, 000 individuals were recorded). In light of this, several  projects designed to sustain Giraffe preservation are already well and truly underway, supporting not just Giraffe, but all endangered and almost endangered species.

Our official partner The Giraffe Conservation Foundation is doing amazing things to help sustain Giraffe populations and stabilise the ongoing conservation effort. You can support the foundation and stay up to date with their excellent work here:

Giraffes are awesome and deserve to be appreciated!

All my friends on Facebook have turned into Giraffes?

Yes, we wish we could say it was down to everybody wanting to be one of us (I mean they do) but we haven't infiltrated the minds of everyone...yet.

Have you noticed that most people on your friends list on Facebook have changed their profile photo to a picture of a Giraffe?

Well,  it has nothing to do with the mammal...or us. It's about a riddle!

The riddle which has fiddled the minds of many is:

‘It’s 3am, the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors! It’s your parents and they are here for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?’

Those who get the answer wrong, must change their picture to one of a giraffe, and then re-post the riddle asking their friends to message them what they think the answer is - spreading the game further around the social networking site.

We're far too inquisitive here at giraffe, so we got the answer instantly (well, I did). If you want the answer all you have to do is Google it, you'll be slapping yourself for not getting it in the first place.

How to Use Instagram for Business and Achieve Huge Results.

In terms of functionality, you might think that Instagram’s sole purpose as a camera app is to take pictures of food and put a filter over it, and you would probably be right in that assumption. Instagram, quite simply, is there to help users share photos from their everyday life. But like with every social media platform, there is an opportunity to turn it into a marketing driver for businesses. Since its release in 2010, people have been flocking to the site. In fact, as of February 2013, Instagram had a total of over 100 million active users. This makes it a huge pot for businesses to get in on the action, create some engaging content and increase brand awareness.

But how do businesses use it effectively? Fortunately there are businesses out there that have already cracked the Instagram puzzle. I direct your attention to the coffee giant Starbucks

How Starbucks have made use of Instagram is quite simple. They play upon the “emotional connections” that customers have had with Starbucks over the years and turn their product photos into works of art (as much as coffee can be considered a work of art). They also use Starbucks as a platform to get their new creations out to the public and raise awareness for the product. These approaches combined have allowed Starbucks to gain 1.4 million followers on the site.

Still not convinced that businesses can use Instagram effectively yet? Lets consider a slightly different organisation, perhaps General Electric?

General Electric approach Instagram knowing that there is no real emotional attachment between users and their products. So what do they do? They try and blow you away! Most of the photos on their Instagram involve trying to amaze you with the technology that they have at their fingertips. Whether it be inside a factory or up in the sky with a fighter jet, they have successfully captured the attention of many a tech geek with followers in excess of 140,000. Quite astonishing when you consider that General Electric probably isn't going to be the first company you follow on Instagram. They don’t just stop there though. They also conduct Instagram competitions with the chance of your photo being uploaded on their Instagram feed.

So there you have it. You may still not be convinced that it can be used in a business sense but when a site has 100 million followers and has only been up for 3 years, it may be time to start following suit before you turn into a social laggard.

What is SXSW?!

Lets all head on down to the SXSW.

They say everything is bigger in Texas. SXSW is no different. The South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals, which take place in Austin every year, converge the music, film and technology industries into one uber awesome experience. SXSW claim they are the premier destination for discovery, and I’m not going to argue with them.

Have I gotten you all excited? Good. You should be. A ticket to this prestigious event could cost you upwards of $1500, and by most accounts it would be well worth every penny.

The event is split into three distinct parts, each with its own agenda. SXSW Interactive features an integration of innovative technologies. It has earned a reputation as a breeding ground for creative technologies and is described as the biggest event of its kind in the world. SXSW Music Festival is not to be outdone though, as it features an astounding 2,200 performances in more than 100 venues every single year. The music festival integrates social platforms and networking into the festival to foster industry relationships. On top of all of that, there is the SXSW Film Festival that features over 1000 entries and many keynote industry speakers. At festivals end, a handful of awards and honours are given out and represent a globally recognisable achievement.

This event brings together the latest and newest of everything under the sun and truly represents the innovative achievements of each and every year. Entrepreneurs, developers, producers, directors, musicians, engineers, inventors, anyone, even you, are all welcome to come and share ideas with the world. Big names such as Twitter, Foursquare, and SoundCloud have all taken part in, and gained recognition through SXSW. Who knows maybe you’re next…

Am I advertising SXSW without any compensation? Very out of character. Perhaps I should receive a free pass for my press contributions. Ill start the social media campaign; #SendMarktoSXSW anyone? Don’t worry, it will catch on…

This is a festival to mark off on your calendar, folks. You should check out the details for SXSW 2014 at http://sxsw.com and sign up the second registration opens on August 1st. I hope you’re excited and Ill see you all there next March!

The lasting question throughout my exploration of SXSW is simply this: Why on earth does this festival take place in Austin?

If you have an answer for me please share it!
