How Many of the top 5 videos of 2012 have you Seen?
When I began to research this topic, I was expecting to find Barack Obama's presidential re-election victory speech and the Red Bull Stratos Parachute Jump on the list of the five most popular YouTube videos for 2012. However, these didn't come close, with the official account of the latter securing 'only' over 33 million hits at the time of writing.
Here therefore is a brief overview of last year's top five, according to both ITV and the masters of video upload and streaming themselves:
1. 'Gangnam Style' by PSY – Released 15/07/12
Anyone with a vague recollection of popular culture would've predicted this outcome. With numerous television appearances, the accolade of the first YouTube video to reach one billion hits, and the inevitable increase in his bank account and attention for South Korea, not just from his neighbours across the demilitarised zone, it's safe to say that PSY has done very well with this phenomenon. But if you thought his attempt at world domination was over, think again, as he's just released his new track 'Gentleman'. And yes, it's another catchy one...
2. Somebody That I Used to Know - Walk off the Earth (Cover of Gotye song) – Released 05/01/2012
I'll be honest, I hadn't heard or seen this cover of a song which reached the top of the UK charts in January of last year. It's quite good though, especially as the band share one guitar between the five of them and slightly liven up what I have think is a depressing track. Credit to them also for securing nearly 150 million hits. Yes, it pales in comparison to 'Gangnam Style', but it's a figure which the vast majority of X Factor rejects can only dream of.
3. KONY 2012 – Released 05/03/2012
It's very difficult to summarise this thirty minute film into a paragraph, but i'll say this: what a wonderful demonstration of how to get thousands of people, including volunteers and legislators, behind a particular cause, this being a campaign to end child slavery in Uganda and to bring the alleged main culprit Joseph Kony to trial at the Hague. (Total number of video hits so far: over 97 million.)
4. "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen - Feat. Justin Bieber, Selena, Ashley Tisdale & MORE! - Released 18/02/2012
5. Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney. Epic Rap Battles Of History Season 2. - Released 15/10/2012
Even for someone like me, who has a passion for current affairs, Politics can often be inaccessible and dull. It's great therefore to see a video which critiques the then two presidential candidates in such an informal manner, in addition to the parody 'sorry' video of our Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. (Total number of video hits so far: over 64 million.)
A final point on this question: expect to see a Harlem Shake video on next year's list.
