Creating Content for Facebook: Our Top Tips

You may be thinking that it’s a bit too late to be thinking about creating content for Facebook. That ship has already sailed, right? Well, no! With nearly 3 billion people still using the platform, there are plenty of opportunities to reach a new audience.

As social marketing experts, we know a few things about creating content for Facebook, and in this guide, we’re spilling our secrets to help you make content that’ll get engagement.

Why is Creating Content for Facebook Important?

Simply put, your audience isn’t going to follow or interact with a page that doesn’t have any content. As Bill Gates once said; content is king. And nowhere is this more apparent than on social media.

Creating high-quality content is the best method of building an audience on Facebook. By inspiring, entertaining, or informing your audience, you can give them a reason to keep coming back.

Engaged audience members are more likely to share your content to their friends, helping to boost brand awareness. And you don’t need us to tell you how important brand awareness is.

Tips for Creating Content for Facebook

Now that you know the importance of creating content for Facebook, let’s look at how. Below, you can check out our very top tips to help you make high-quality content for social media!

Create content that interests your audience

Posting content that genuinely fascinates your target audience is the key to creating a successful page on Facebook. A big mistake that a lot of people make when they start creating content is posting what they find interesting, not necessarily what their audience does.

Before you start seriously creating content for Facebook, we recommend you do a bit of research into your target audience. Learning where they spend their time, what their hobbies are, and a whole range of other data points, will help to influence the content you create.

Post multiple types of content

You already know that growing a brand is more than just posting content to Facebook. To attract your target audience, you need to be active where they’re active. They’re most likely not just hanging around on Facebook.

The good news is that you’re probably already writing a blog, which means you have plenty of content to work with. By the way, if you don’t have a blog, you absolutely should.

Anyway, what we’re getting at is the importance of posting multiple types of content to Facebook, including your blog links. Say, for example, you run a bakery; your posting strategy for Facebook could look something like this:

  • Blog Posts – What’s been happening in the kitchen? Create a weekly blog with all the highlights, and post that on Facebook
  • Photos – People like to see behind the scenes, so regularly posting photos showing the production process is great for this
  • Testimonials – Genuine customer reviews can be the most effective form of advertising you have, so don’t ignore them
  • Videos – The future of social is video. So post as much as you can! You can even go live on Facebook to collect feedback at the same time. Which leads us to…

Ask questions

Most people only really care about themselves, so getting your audience involved is super important, not just on Facebook, but on social media in general.

When making a post on Facebook, it’s generally a good idea to include a call to action that asks a question, inviting the audience to leave comments. These questions don’t have to be anything serious. The simpler and easier to respond to, the better.

In our bakery example, they could perhaps make a post about a new cupcake flavour, and ask “What flavour would you like us to make next?” It’s simple, but at the same time invites the audience to contribute their thoughts and ideas, without too much effort.

Going live, again, is a great way to ask your audience questions and gather important feedback too. We’ve even got a guide to help you use Facebook Live to promote your business.

Host a competition

If you’re starting from scratch, with absolutely no existing audience, a great way to get some quick engagements on your page is by holding a competition or giveaway.

Social media competitions are relatively cheap and easy ways of getting new people to interact with your page. The most important thing is to give them a reason to keep coming back and engaging with your content, so having a plan for what you’ll post when the giveaway has ended is essential.

Curate content

The hardest thing about creating content for Facebook is, well, creating content. When there’s pressure to regularly update your page with high-quality content, it can all too quickly feel overwhelming.

This is where curating content comes in very handy. Curating is the process of reposting content that you think your audience will enjoy, and adding a small comment from yourself.

Our imaginary baker may, for example, follow a whole bunch of other bakeries. She may see that a page she follows posted a cool recipe for a spooky Halloween cake. This recipe may have gotten a lot of engagement.

She thinks that her audience will also be interested in this recipe. So instead of spending hours coming up with her own, she can simply repost that to her page, and add a little comment saying why she thinks her audience will love it.

That, right there, is content curation. Of course, that’s a very simplified version of how it all works. In our in-depth article, we explain exactly how content creation works, and how you can use it in your social media strategy.
